Is It Safe For Pregnant Women To Get Permanent Hair Color?

You may have seen my article a little while ago entitled "Should Pregnant Women Get Relaxers". Well, the question was asked, what about hair color? Is it safe for pregnant women to color their hair? Here's my answer.  Just as with relaxers, it has not been proven that coloring your hair (with permanent color) is harmful to the unborn fetus. The color does not penetrate into the bloodstream, but if it should be applied be sure the space is very well ventilated because permanent hair color can have a strong smell which pregnant women should most definitely avoid.

However, if you want to err on the side of caution, all chemicals should be avoided during pregnancy. Any toxic chemical that pregnant women are exposed to can have an adverse effect on the baby if the baby is exposed to high enough amounts.  A lot of physicians recommend that (permanent) hair color be avoided during the first trimester, due to the baby is going through great amounts of neurological developments during this time.  They suggest that its best to wait until the second and third trimester to color the hair.  Remember, temporary color, semi-permanent, and demi-permanent colors are completely safe because they do not contain ammonia.  If you can not live without your color, avoid it coming in contact with your scalp to reduce any exposure to your bloodstream. And as always, only allow your trusted professionally licensed hairstylist to perform all chemical services on your hair.
