Are Brazilian Blowouts Safe For Kids?

Brazilian blowouts have become more and more popular among my natural clients. They all want their silk press to last just a little bit longer but have no idea how to make that happen. They are also tired of having their hair be controlled by the weather. Many of my adult clients that get the Brazilian Blowout come back later with their daughters for them to get the treatment as well because they love the results which leads us to today's topic. Are Brazilian Blowouts safe for kids?

Brazilian Blowouts are most definitely safe for kids! Why? Because they are not harsh chemicals so they do not burn the clients scalp at all. You could apply the solution to the hair, leave the country, then come back and your hair would not be in any danger of coming out. Of course you can not eat it or get it in your eyes or anything like that but it is very safe which is why I do these more on kids than adults. Many women (and men) do not want their kids to have a relaxer yet

How To Get The Hair You Have Always Wanted

We have all said it. I wish my hair was this or I wish my hair was that. We have all looked at someone else's hair and said I wish my hair was like that! It is definitely true that we all want what we do not have. Those with thin hair want it thicker, those with thicker hair want it thinner because we feel it is too much to manage. So the question came up about can we change the texture of our hair. Absolutely, yes we can.

Can Wearing A Wig Look Natural Or Should We Save Them For Granny? || Styling "Ashley"

Long gone are the days where wearing wigs was taboo. These days our grandmothers are not the only ones wearing them. As the hair extensions get better and better and more hairstylists doing custom sew-ins, custom (natural looking) wigs could not be far behind. I started making wigs shortly after getting out of cosmetology school but in my opinion they were not that great. For one I did not have my hair company yet and was still using beauty supply hair (mistakes 1, 2, AND 3). Once I got my technique down and got the right hair it was like all of the stars aligned! Now the possibilities are endless. Many people have no idea that I even wear wigs, they think its my real hair, which is the point. I prefer wigs because I am not able to braid my own hair the way I need to in order to do a sew in so this is the next

Why You Should Never Color Your Relaxed Hair

Why You Should Never Color Your Relaxed Hair

Many of my clients with relaxed hair ask me about getting color. Since I specialize in healthy hair, I normally advise my clients against getting permanent hair color. The reason for this is because the hair often can not handle one chemical let alone two. Think about it. How many women do you know personally who have had damage from a relaxer OR color without having them both? I personally know quite a few! Now imagine how much that number increases when you have someone who has both chemicals. If you just have to have color on your relaxed hair I strongly recommend not going over two shades above your natural hair color. So, if you have black hair you have no business trying to get your relaxed hair colored blonde. The lightest you may be able to go without having any damage is dark brown.

Also, many women do not take into account the fact that relaxed hair that has been colored needs extra care and attention. So, you

How To Get The Look Of A Roller Set Without Sitting Under The Dryer

If you are like many women, especially if you have relaxed hair, you have had your fair share of sitting under the hair dryer. I in particular never cared for the dryer because I had so much thick hair that one round (which equals one hour) never got my hair fully dry. Most of my clients do not like sitting under the dryer so I have to try to find ways, if possible, to either decrease or eliminate their dryer time. When you think of roller set you can't help but think of the hair dryer as well. The client featured in this post is like many women because she loves to have her hair set but absolutely hates sitting under the dryer. So at her hair appointment I decided to

Things You Should Always Do After Taking Down Braids And/Or Sew-ins

Most of the time when we get braids and sew-ins they stay up for at least 2-3 months. This gives our hair an opportunity to rest from the everyday stresses we can put on it. This two to three month period is a great time to let our hair grow as well. Then there is the dreaded take down. You take your hair down, look up in the mirror, and often times have to do a double take because you can not believe that is your hair on top of your head. What you do next is critical to the amount of shedding you will have! Today I want to share with you a few things you should always do after taking down braids and/or sew ins.

1.  Comb through thoroughly! This is so, so, so, so (you get the point) very important. If your hair is extremely tangled, start with a wide toothed comb. Comb through as much

One Thing That Will Always Help Your Hair Grow

one thing that will always help your hair grow

Recently I did a hair challenge that required me to limit my amount of heat usage on my hair to prove that reducing the amount of heat on the hair can help it to grow. I have always encouraged the use of heat on the hair to be limited to once per week or less but I decided to actually explore the "or less" part of that statement a little further. So, what I decided to do was push my shampoos back from once per week to once every three weeks. Remember this was only an experiment to see if I would notice any difference in the amount of growth in my hair. In normal life I like to shampoo my hair weekly. The reason I chose to not shampoo my hair is because I know I like to wear my hair straight. If I were to continue shampooing it weekly I would have to set my hair on rollers, rods, or to a twist set and I did not want any of those styles. The only way to straighten

Why Your Hair Weave Looks Terrible And No One Will Tell You

Have you ever wondered why people will stare at your hair but not compliment you? Or why your weave never seems to look quite the way you planned? Today we are going to explore how to get the best quality extensions out there because no one is going to tell you that your weave looks terrible. They do not want to hurt your feelings!

great looking hair extensions

More and more women are wearing hair extensions these days. There was a time when it was seen as a negative thing if you wore anything but your real hair but times have surely changed! Nowadays some people feel like it is perfectly acceptable to walk right up to you and ask what kind of hair you have in your head, without even being sure that you actually have extensions! I have people ask me all the time if I am wearing my real hair or not, which is actually a compliment in my opinion because they are saying that your hair looks so good that you must have extensions. I have had clients who swore they would never wear weave now getting their second and third sew in! The truth is that extensions can be a great thing. They allow you to try all kinds of different hairstyles that you either do not have enough hair to try or that you do not want to commit to. They allow you to play with color and experiment with different textures. And they can also aid in helping your hair to grow. I've had clients who get sew-ins for an entire year and see significant growth in their hair once removed.

premium quality hair extensions

Now that hair extensions are so popular it seems as though everyone and their mother is selling hair. People that do not even do hair or have any connection to the hair industry are even selling hair! That is one of the reasons that I decided to get L. Jones Hair Collection, so that I could have a line that I trust to sell to my clients and to wear myself. My clients never have to question if their hair extensions are going to be good or not because they know that they are coming from me. With so many choices available, and with many of my clients being first time extension wearers, I did not want them to be overwhelmed with who they should or should not get their hair from. As a matter of fact, when I do sew-ins, I do not do them if the hair did not come from L. Jones Hair Collection. That way I know that I will not have any surprises when it comes to the hair. I get my hair directly from my manufacturer who I trust and has not let me down. What it all comes down to is that women want great hair when choosing their extensions.

3 Things To Consider Before Going Natural

3 things to consider before going natural

Many women either are natural these days or are considering going natural. I have clients all the time that tell me they are going to go natural. It seems like as soon as women with relaxed hair get any kind of damage to their hair, going natural is their answer for that. It is like there is some kind of unspoken rule that states natural hair equals healthy hair. While I do agree that most women who have natural hair do have healthier hair than their relaxed haired counterparts, I do not agree that you have to be natural to have healthy hair. Take me for example. I have had relaxed hair for as long as I can remember and I love my hair relaxed. My hair is long, healthy, and thick! Now, have I ever had any damage to my hair at all that was related to me having a relaxer? Yes! But that was because I was doing things to my hair that should not have been done to relaxed hair. I had no idea what I was doing because it was way before I even gave serious thought to becoming a hairstylist. I simply thought I could copy what I saw my hairstylist doing because it looked so easy. I was in college which means my funds were extremely limited (aka I was broke!) so I figured it couldn't be that hard to take matters into my own hands.

But not once during all of my experimental years did I think to go natural. Why? Because I always knew that my relaxed hair could be healthy.  I'm not knocking anyone for wanting to go natural. As a matter of fact, I do not encourage my clients either way. If they say they want be relaxed I support that decision and if they say they want to go natural I support that decision as well because I can keep the hair healthy in either state. When going natural though, I find that many of my clients do not really think it all the way through. They simply say they are going natural just because it sounds good. Today I want to help you make an educated decision if going natural is what you are considering doing by giving you three things to think about before going natural.

3 things to consider before going natural

1. How do you plan to become natural? Are you going to do the big chop or transition? This is something to think about when going natural. Many women do not want to fool with two textures of hair so they choose to chop it all off up front. Others are not comfortable with cutting that much hair off so they gradually grow it out and transition into becoming natural.

2.  How are you going to wear your hair once it is completely natural? A lot of women never even think about this question. Are you still
