How To Stretch Your Relaxer Series (week 4)

Ok ladies, it is week four in my stretch.  For me it still feels like I just got my relaxer yesterday.  Hair is still straight.  It is so hard for me to believe that years ago I would be getting ready to get a touch up in two more weeks!  What was I thinking??  For those of you who are used to getting a touch up at six weeks, DO NOT DO IT!  You more than likely do not even have an inch of new growth yet!  You need to have at least two inches to avoid damage from over-processing.  We are still in the easy part now.  Just remember to keep wrapping your hair every night so that your edges and roots will lay down!

Check out the video on this week of my stretch.. This week I did not use heat, but instead did a roller wrap for all of you that do not like using heat in your hair weekly.

Quiz: Should You Go Natural Or Keep Your Relaxer?

Are you thinking about going natural?  Are you considering ditching your relaxer?  I have put together a quiz for you to take in order to help you make your decision.  Remember, neither answer is necessarily wrong, your main goal should always be to have healthy hair.  You can have relaxed hair that is damaged and you can also have natural hair that is damaged.  You want to choose the best option for you that will allow you to have the healthiest hair possible.  Let's get started!

Grab a piece of paper and write down yes or no for your answers.

Could Relaxer Stretching Lead To Transitioning To Natural Hair?

Today I had a client that has come a long way as far as relaxer stretching.  She used to get her relaxers ever six weeks like clock work (until she started coming to me).  Once she started coming to me I began encouraging her to stretch her relaxer out to see her hair become healthier and grow faster.  She was reluctant at first but eventually agreed.  My goal for her was to get her relaxers every ten to twelve weeks.  To my surprise she has passed my goal for her and made it thirteen weeks!  Despite me giving her the green light to get her relaxer at twelve weeks, she said she would keep it going since I was able to get her hair straight without getting a touch up.  The only problem is that she is afraid to shampoo her hair on her own.  She said as long as she comes to me she is fine because she can simply maintain what I do.  Once she gets her hair wet, she does not know what to do with it when she is all alone.  Take a look at her new growth at week thirteen.

How To Stretch Your Relaxer Series (week3)

This week was another easy week for the series.  I simply shampooed my hair with Silk Hydration by L. Jones Clarifying Shampoo, then followed up with Silk Hydration by L. Jones Moisturizing Shampoo.  After that I skipped the creme conditioner and instead used the Silk Hydration by L. Jones Leave-In.  I did this because my hair tends to get a bit oily pretty quickly during the week.  Using the leave-in conditioner instead allows my hair to make its own moisture instead of adding it with the creme conditioner.  Next, I just combed it straight down and put some foam wrap on it.  Then I let it air dry until the next morning.  The next day I just flat ironed it.  My roots were still straight from the relaxer so no extra effort was required.

Here is the video footage:

Remember, this is still the easy part!  The real work will begin around week six.  So have fun with your hair this week.  You can still enjoy roller sets and they won't look grandma-ish kind of big like when it is relaxer time.  Honestly you could rock any style right about now and it will look great since you still have that freshly-relaxed vibe still going on.  My hair does look noticeably longer since my last relaxer, and I can see why since I did have four inches of new growth!  But it is actually nice to notice it, and my clients have noticed as well!  When you start seeing actual growth the relaxer stretching will all seem worth it.

***Series*** How To Stretch Your Relaxer (week 2)

Week 2 update;

This week was just as easy as week one.  The only thing I did this week was shampoo with Silk Hydration by L. Jones Clarifying Shampoo and then applied some Silk Hydration by L. Jones Leave-In Conditioner.  I put some foam wrap on my edges and roots, combed straight down, then let my hair air dry.  I put my freshly washed silk scarf on it and the next day I blow dried and curled with the flat iron.  I will not put any more heat on my hair until I shampoo it again.  Take a look at some of my selfies from after I curled it.

When I had my hair relaxed, I had over three inches of new growth!  My hair has completely grow out of the bob I was in love with and is now just barely past my shoulders.  I am going to continue to let it grow out and will put on my weave when I feel the urge to go shorter.

Here is video footage on my week #2 on relaxer stretching.

Is Dandruff Contagious?

Being a professional hairstylist, I have seen a lot of flaky scalps.  I have also heard a lot of stories on how the scalp got that way.  One question that I was asked was if dandruff could possibly be contagious.  Well, first I would like to point out that all flakes are not created equal.  You could have your classic case of dandruff which is moderate flaking, or you could have a more serious scalp condition like psoriasis or eczema in the scalp.

**Series** How To Stretch Your Relaxers (week1)

Today I am starting my series on how to stretch out your relaxers.  This will be a video series showing exactly what I do to my hair week after week in order to make it to my six-month goal.  A lot of you have been asking how in the world this is possible, so I will be showing you exactly what I do.  Please remember, this is what works for me.  It may or may not work for you but at least you will have a general idea of what direction to go in.  Check out the first video below.

The first week after getting a relaxer is the easiest!  You can pretty much do whatever you want with your hair and it will look just fine.  This week I will be wrapping my hair every day in order to keep my edges and roots straight.  The real test comes around week six, so if you have just gotten a touch up this week, enjoy your straightness for now!
