What Is Natural Hair?

It has come to my attention that there are many definitions of "natural" hair depending on who you ask. Well today I'm here to give the real actual definition of what it means to be natural.

Before I begin I want to start with this disclaimer: This is my professional and personal opinion on what it means to be natural.  While I welcome and encourage everyone to feel free to write their opinions in the comments on this blog, I ask that you please do not email me about this.  I know a lot of you, especially the natural ladies get a bit sensitive about this.  With that said, here it goes.

Your hair is natural if it is the same way it was when you came out of your mother's womb.  That means chemical free, meaning no relaxer, no texturizer, no color (permanent or temporary).  Simple as that.  Now, if you flat iron your hair, twist it, roll it, curl it, etc, you are still natural.  Natural means you don't have any chemicals in your hair.  If you are relaxer free but have color in your hair, you are not natural.  It seems like now a days women refer to themselves as natural, but they are really saying they no longer have a relaxer.  And I know to a lot of you relaxer free ladies, it means a lot for you to say that you are natural but it's really no big deal.  Saying you are relaxer free is just as effective.

The reason why I am doing this post today is because I have had a lot of clients, especially new ones, who call telling me they are natural but they either have color or a texturizer. And a texturizer is still a relaxer, it's just not left in long at all.  It simply loosens up the curl pattern slightly for better management and control of the hair.

Now that all of my lovely readers know the definition of natural, you can (if you haven't already)  now start using the term correctly.  And if you have a chemical in your hair, don't be ashamed of it! Heck, I have a relaxer in my hair and am proud of it.  It's all about how you take care of your hair.  As long as your hair is healthy keep doing what you are doing.
