How To Properly Do A Hot Oil Treatment

hot oil treatment
Hot oil treatments can be great for dry scalp, especially now that the temperatures are dropping which is when our hair is the dryest.  Today I'm going to explain to you how to do one correctly.  Before I begin, first let me say that if your scalp is dry to first be sure that you are drinking at least 48-64oz of water daily and eating a properly balanced diet.  Otherwise, a hot oil treatment is only going to be a band-aid over the underlying problem.  Now that we've gotten that out of the way let's get to it.

Here are your step by step directions on how to do your hot oil treatment:

  1. Apply oil to scalp- Do this in sections.  Apply the oil to the scalp by parting the hair and applying oil.  Although it is practically impossible to not get oil on the hair, try to get as minimal amount on the hair as possible.  Do this until all of your scalp has oil on it.
  2. Cover head- A plastic cap will do for this.
  3. Sit under hood dryer- Sit under the dryer for about 10-15 minutes to allow the oil to heat up and lubricate your scalp.
  4. Shampoo & condition- Shampoo with a moisturizing shampoo instead of a clarifying shampoo because you don't want to completely strip the hair of the oil you put in it, but you still want your hair to light and have movement.  If you don't shampoo the excess oil out your hair will be extremely heavy and have way too much product build-up on it.  After you have shampooed your hair you can use a light moisturizing conditioner like Silk Hydration by L. Jones Daily Conditioner.
  5. Style as usual- After you have done all of this you are now ready to style your hair as you usually would.
  6. Enjoy!- You are now ready to enjoy your nourished scalp!

  1. Thank you. Very helpful information.

  2. Ive been doing these hot oil treatments described here for the past month or so and my scalp looks a whole lot better!!
