Can Relaxed Hair Be Colored Without Causing Damage?

This client has relaxed hair that is colored.  This was her first time coming to me, she already had it colored by another hairstylist.  I always advise clients to pick the chemical of their choice and not to do both.  Either pick between color or relaxer.  Having both almost always leads to damaged hair.

She told me that her hair always feels like it is dry and nothing seems to help it.  I ended up giving her a moisturizing treatment with Silk Hydration by L. Jones Intense Moisturizing Treatement.  Before I even rinsed it from her hair she stated that she could already tell that it was working because no other product felt like that on her hair.  I let it sit for about 30 minutes before rinsing.  After the first treatment her hair already felt noticeably softer and very silky.

Although the client's hair was not damaged on the ends, she wanted it cut so I cut it into a bob.  Her edges however, have already felt the wrath of having both a relaxer and color.  They were extremely broke off and short (see pic below).  She will need to come back in two weeks to get a protein treatment in order to keep her hair strong and prevent it from any more breakage.

Afterwards she couldn't keep her hands out of her hair and said that she really liked it.  She also advised me that she is going to let her relaxer grow out so that she will only have one chemical, the color. If she continues to come on a regular basis to get the proper treatments for her hair she will not suffer from extreme damage and breakage.
