When Is It Ok To Color Relaxed Hair?

This client of mine does have relaxed hair and color.  I usually don't recommend this as it is very hard and expensive to keep colored and relaxed hair healthy.  However, this client gets her relaxers very infrequently, I'm talking like every six months or longer.  She prefers to have the color instead, which is why I can color her hair this light all over without having to worry about her hair beginning to shed or break off.

Her hair was colored to a dark blonde because her skin is so light that she does not like black hair.  I have no problem coloring her hair and I always give her a reconstructor with it as well.

She comes in for her color touch ups every few months to avoid black roots.

This is one of the only times that I recommend getting color when having relaxed hair.  That is because most people want to color their hair and get their hair relaxed way too frequently.  If you are going to relax and color you really need to pick which one you want more.  If you want color, you are going to have to stretch your relaxers way out in order to not cause any damage to the hair.  If you prefer your relaxers, you don't need to get color unless you don't mind paying for a reconstructive treatment and moisture treatments just about every other visit.  Also, never try to do your color on your own, it can be disastrous.  Take it from me, I am speaking from experience!

  1. This post makes me feel better about highlighting my hair next week. I haven't highlighted my hair in years and I'm ready for a change. I'm getting it down professionally. I relax every 18 weeks and if I decide to retouch it won't be until about August. Unfortunately, I can't get to the shop as often as I use to but I make sure that I keep up with my deep conditioning and use my reconstructor often. This post has been very helpful.
