How To Prevent Traction Alopecia

Traction alopecia is the thinning or balding of hair due to too much stress on the hair.  It can come from incorrectly wearing extensions, ponytails being too tight, and the ultimate culprit: braids.  It is 100% preventable by simply taking care of your hair.  If you constantly wear these styles that pull on the edges or any part of your hair, you are putting your hair at risk!  Although you may not see the effects from traction alopecia on the first, second, or even fifth time, eventually YOU WILL notice a difference in your hair.  The following client received micro braids and knew that they felt too tight around the edges. Instead of immediately taking them down, she allowed the braids to stay in, I'm assuming, because she thought they would eventually loosen up.  Well they did more than that.  The braids around the edges began to fall completely out of her head, with her real hair still attached, leaving bald spots.  SHE WAS COMPLETELY BALD AROUND HER EDGES!! She finally took the braids completely down and noticed all of the damage.  Please don't let this happen to you. What you see below is the hair trying to grow back.

Traction alopecia is real!

Let this be a lesson to you all.  You don't have to let experience be your teacher.  If any style you get feels too tight, it is!  Don't try to wait for it too loosen up on its own because by then it may be too late.  The edges are the most fragile part of the hair.  Most of the time it is the thinnest and it can not take a lot of manipulation or stress.  And once damaged, it takes longer for the edges to grow back than the rest of the hair.

And remember, it ALWAYS cost you more money to fix a mistake.  Always trust your instincts when it comes to your hair.  If you have that feeling telling you something isn't right, trust your gut.  Luckily this client has enough hair to cover up her sides so that no one will be able to tell.  However this isn't always the case.  Never sacrifice the health of your hair for a style.  Until next time...
